Whyfor Gothmas?

Sweet Lolita, by Alisa Perne

Alisa is one of our official bloggers for GxG and I couldn’t be more proud of her. This is lovely.  ❤

Yesterday, I finally got a chance to scrape together enough time to read some of the blog posts people have written about GxG.  I was directed to this one and really loved it, much to the surprise of its’ author. Really, go read it- it’s good.

I wanted to use that post to springboard into this one, and talk about how and why this event is different from the other Cursed events – something that Sal seems to understand even without discussing it with me.

In 2014 we will be doing four big events(so, not including Oopskate since that’s only one night a year)  but until now we’ve only done three a year- GxG, World Goth Fair, and A Clockwork Spiral.  All of them have changed over the years in ways big and small.  We learn from every event we do.  They are all different.  Futurewave, which we’re adding in 2014 will be different still.  But GxG is its own case.  It’s morphed a lot over the years.  It’s almost unrecognizable from where it began, and that’s a good thing. As SL evolved it evolved too.  But really, it’s designed to be an easy event for both merchants and shoppers for the end of the year.  It’s meant to be low-pressure, as this time of year everyone is under enormous pressure in RL.  Because there’s no booth fee, there’s no way for merchants to lose money.  If it’s slow, no biggie- it didn’t cost anything.   If it’s busy? Bonus! There’s no rules about exclusives, or new stuff (though a lot of people choose to put out both), but there’s no pressure on merchants to jump through a lot of hoops to be involved. This event is intended to be as inclusive as possible- the only really firm rules are about vendors and IP/infringing content. It’s pretty open ended.

Because there’s such a low barrier to entry, we get a broad mix of applicants. For many, each year, it’s their very first foray into being in events at all.  When it’s your first time doing a big event it can be scary and you feel like you’re in over your head. You don’t know about how important things like display and exhibit design are.  You don’t necessarily know what the trends are in advertising design.  Creators are often in their own bubbles regarding these things.  We largely work by ourselves and don’t get out much. We don’t often see what else is out there, because we’re so busy churning out the next release.   But events in general, but this one in particular, allows creators to come together in a low-stress environment and check stuff out.  Look at people around them. See what others are doing.  Gain inspiration and learn new stuff.

Sal is right- our group is very nice to one another. Very helpful and cross-supportive.  We try as hard as we can as the org team to do the heavy lifting on this event.  This allows both seasoned and new creators to breathe a little easier. Our experience tells us that the experiences that folks have with GxG, whether they make money or just gain experience are good- they come back to us for World Goth Fair, which is easily the toughest event we do all year.  And when they do, after their experience at GxG they up their game.   They take what they’ve learned and they apply it. They do better products, better ads, better booth designs.  They ask for more critique, more help, and they get better at what they do.

A rising tide raises all ships.

In many of the smaller, niche markets change is slow to come, and SL has undergone a lot of technical changes in the past 18 months.  But when creators see what’s possible, and how they can adapt those things not only in mainstream markets but in niche markets as well (which is all we do at Cursed events- mainstream isn’t our thing.) they find ways to adopt those new methodologies into their products and branding.  The big names do their thing, and the small names get bigger and better from the experience.

That’s what GxG is about.  It’s not intended to be a rough event. We have all our other events for that.  It’s about taking a breather at the end of the year, and everyone coming together in mutual support of a small scene.

We’re pretty happy with that goal.

This photo wasn’t from one of our official bloggers but it’s just so nice I’m posting it anyway (don’t kill me, Sonya.) It’s from our event Flickr Pool (which you can post to also!)

2 days to go.

Gothmas by Gaslight 2, by Sonya Marmurek

2 days to go.

Everyone is predictably tired, and we’re at the stage where any real problems come in all at once and last minute.

We have final notices in to the last few stragglers and will have definitive answers for waiting list merchants by noon tomorrow, SLT. We know you’re waiting and as soon as we know, you’ll know.

If you’re having trouble finding your booth, make sure you’re on the right sim- check the merchant list for details. If you use Area Search with your store name, it will pop up- Lokii has the signs tagged.

Once again- vendors and gachas are in group notices. If you need a different script in order to add partners, etc. to the split just let us know – we can help you with that.  Again, just as it says on the FAQ, no networked/multivendors are allowed at our events. We will return any we find.

Several people will be screaming in at the last minute (likely self included, as I have one store I’m still building for) and I appreciate their giving me the heads up.  🙂

Almost time 🙂

Load-in.

Load in has begun. We’re t minus three days.

Sims are done, and the bloggers have started filling up the flickr pool with awesome photos just like this one by Acha. (actually this was taken before I finished up the details, but I love this photo anyway and I make the photo choices around here, damn it.)

Gothmas by Gaslight 5, by Achariya Maktoum.

A note to merchants – if you can phantom things, please do.  It helps a lot when the sim gets busy, especially if you have displays in the middle of your booth.    Also, Lokii sent an alternate gacha if you want to use it – it’s 3LI and you can find it in group notices.

Load em up, gang. We open at NOON on December 15.

It’s almost time.

It’s almost time.

The builds are 98% complete.  Anything else now is just details.    Merchant load in officially begins on December 10 and we open at NOON SLT on the 15th(why noon? Because midnight is a giant pain in the ass for everyone except me. So noon it is.) The Gothika Mobile Unit will be running its usual schedule during the event.

Our Cursed Events Build Kitteh is Lokii Violet.  I just add the details(and apparently, the snow), but she slings the heavy prims- all credit for this goes to her.

Cursed Events bloggers are welcome to come up at any time to take photos. If you want to be one of those people, go fill out the application– it’s open until the 10th, when we begin merchant load-in. Our flickr pool is here.

Remember, if you need to drop out of the event, please let us know. We do maintain a waiting list just for this purpose. But don’t just disappear without saying something.  It’s a lot easier to deal with these things when we know they’re happening.

Everyone else,  get ready- the dark is coming back.

Merchant Applications are closed.

I’ve just closed merchant applications for GxG 2013.  Thank you to everyone who applied. Currently we are sold out and we have 8 stores on our waiting list.  Blogger applications are open until December 10.

Stuff for merchants:

Lokii sent out sample booth shells for sizing, etc. in a group notice yesterday- so make sure you grab those if you haven’t done so already.

Vendors/Gachas will be sent out in group notice no later than the 9th.  Load in officially begins on the 10th (if we’re ready before then we’ll let people in before then.)

Please send Lokii Violet a 512×512 full perm store logo for your booth so she can assign booth spaces.  If you’ve been in our events before we *MIGHT* have your logo but we might not.  Best send to Lokii anyway.  Sponsor logs we obviously have, and I’ve updated the main page to put all of them up.  *points to the left*.

If you need to drop out of the event- that’s fine, but we need you to TELL SOMEONE. Do not just disappear into the ether.  We don’t mind when people drop out. We mind a lot (really, a lot) when people don’t tell us and we have to scramble to fill the space at the last minute when we’re trying to set up our own stores.   Any store not in the process of setup *and who has not talked to us about it* by noon on the 14th of December will lose their event slot. Not kidding, gang. We ain’t playing on this.  Please don’t make us chase you down for info.

Stuff for shoppers:

As soon as Lokii assigns booth spaces and finishes the Sium layout, we’ll post maps to both sims.  Please be patient, this is a fussy process.

Stuff for everyone:

Gothmas by Gaslight 2013 will open at NOON on December 15.  (Midnight openings are a pain in the ass.)

More info as I have it.

Update: Merchant things, sponsor things, event things.

What. Coming up with witty titles isn’t easy.  I’m not a writer, you know.

I got all the booth slots assigned on the merchant list.  If anyone needs their booth switched to the other sim they should probably say something.

I’m still waiting on two blurbs from sponsors, and several sponsors have to pay their sponsor fee.  All sponsor fees are due by November 30.  Anyone not paid up by then will lose their sponsor slot (not their booth slot, their sponsor slot) to the next person on the sponsor waiting list (and to be genuinely honest I’ll be disinclined to let that person sign on as a sponsor again- it’s a pain in the ass to have to keep shuffling things around when this happens.)

We’re still sold out, and currently we have 3 people on the waiting list.  Again, we OFTEN need waiting list folks so if you meant to apply, please do so. Especially during the holidays people can find themselves overwhelmed and needing to drop out of events on short notice.

Not actually about GxG at all, but about Cursed Events in general, I want to thank everyone for the enormous amount of support and votes of confidence we’ve gotten in the past several weeks.  Tangentially related, yesterday I had a conversation with the ever lovely Sian Pearl, owner of MetaTheodora about event organization (which in my mind is actually “Design Project Management”) which after an hour of lively chatter resulted in this:

In 2014 there will be a fourth event added to the Cursed Events schedule – a science fiction event called Futurewave that will take place beginning February 15 and go through February 23rd (at least that’s what it looks like right now.)  Details later, but apps will open on January 1,and blogger apps will open January 15.  More details as I have them but those are the basics.

But first we have to get through Gothmas.  🙂

We are SOLD OUT. :)

Gothmas by Gaslight 2013 is now sold out.

HOWEVER:  If you had meant to apply, please do it ANYWAY.  People *often* drop out and we need people on the waiting list to fill the slots. We’ve had one person drop already.  On average, we need 5-7 people on the waiting list per event due to people dropping out.  It just happens, especially around the holidays.

We will invite you to the event group *even if you’re on the waiting list* to keep abreast of developments.  So please do continue to apply.  Also, as previously mentioned, blogger apps are now open, so if you wanted blogger access, you should fill that app out and Sonya will get to it.

I’ll be assigning final booth placements this weekend.  🙂

One slot left!

Actually, we were sold out for a while but someone needed to drop out.  So we do have ONE slot left. Also, blogger applications are now open, so if you want to be a GxG blogger, make sure to fill one out.

I’m still waiting to hear from 13 people regarding sim preferences, but if I don’t hear by Monday I’m just going to assign slots anyway.  Also, if you’re a sponsor I really need your sponsor blurb for the page.  I’ll have the front page sponsor logos up sometime over the weekend (it’s a theory. Im running with it.)

Have a great weekend, gang!

3 slots left (also, an important update for sponsors.)

Ok, update time.

Right now, we have 3 merchant slots left for GxG 2013.  After that, we’ll roll to the waiting list (again, we ALWAYS need waiting list people, so really, do apply even if we’re full.) I’m still gathering info as to who wants to be where.  Amusingly, so many people who said they didn’t care came back and said “whoops, my bad.” after they realized they did.  Which is why I waited to assign people. 🙂  But I’m slowly getting people put on one sim or the other.  Now that the sponsor spaces are all set, it’s easier.

But speaking of sponsors…

I’m working on the sponsor page.  Right now, the formatting is miserable (I know.), but Synjari is going to swoop in like Batgirl and fix that mess (I *loathe* doing webwork, so this is her gig. Thank you, Syn. <3)  But I need some info from some people.  I need blurbs from a bunch of stores, and I need Sangi to check her email.  Jalynne – you don’t need to send a logo.  Lokii has one, but her internet connection went down this morning before it transferred. I’ll get it when her net comes back again.  Got it. never mind.

But if the sponsors who *don’t* have blurbs on the page could email me whatever they want it to say, I’d appreciate it. If you have one and want to change it, send me what you want it changed *to*, and I’ll do that.  Once we get that page done and formatted (I’m hoping in the next 36 hours or so), we’ll add the sponsor thumbnails to the front page of the site (It’s just a pain in the ass to do in pieces so I’d rather do it in one shot and be done with it.)

More soon, as usual.

AK

Because like most things I’m fashionably late (and up late) to add this..

When build time draws closer, if I don’t already have your logo (which I’m a packrat, I have most of the usual freakywinkles from WGF and ACS in my folders) please start sending them to me – or if you have UPDATED it – send me that too. I’d like to get them  all collectively gathered up around December 1st so when the booth setups are done I can just start setting everyone up and get Ye Olde Sim Maps done as well in one swoop. (Or I will make Shorstack hunt you down with a bat cannon.) Send to Lokii Violet.

Carry on, and onwards to stuff! And things!

– Loks

5 slots left til we’re sold out completely.

Hey gang! Just a short update of bullet points to keep things current:

  • I’ve done an update to the merchant list. The sponsor locations are now set.  There are still 23 merchants who haven’t given me a sim preference (that I have written down anyway…) It’s totally okay not to have a preference, but please let me know that so I can mark it off on my list.   I’m trying to ensure that people who *do* have a preference for whatever reason get the location they want.
  • I will be getting the sponsor page up at some point this week.  If you’re a sponsor and haven’t yet sent me your logo, please send it in reply to the email I sent you confirming your sponsorship.
  • Blogger applications will open on the 15th.
  • Also, if you missed it in group notices, please check there- there’s a typo on the cards in the signs that blows the URL to the website (I put a , instead of a .) I dropped a new card into group notices. You can just replace the one in your sign with the new one. Thanks to  Sangi Phaeton for catching it- it’s so tiny on my screen I never even saw it.
  • Perhaps most importantly, we have only 5 merchant slots remaining.  Once we fill those, I will roll everyone else to the waiting list. We have never NOT needed to pull people from the waiting list, so if you’re on it, there’s a decent chance we’re going to ask you to fill in. All waiting list merchants will be added to the group so they can keep up to date with info.

I think that’s everything… More info to come, as always.
